Help Organize a Debate

Eight Streets is co-sponsoring an At-Large candidate debate to take place at the end of the month. An organizational meeting for the debate is Tuesday, October 16th. We're looking for someone to attend the meeting representing ESNA, and to help them set up and organize the debate itself.

Oct 17 - Voter Registration Deadline

A Reminder to all new residents and unregistered voters – October 17^th is the deadline to register to vote if you’d like to be able to vote in the November elections.   This November all City Councilors are up for election.  You need to go to City Hal to register (the deadline for mail-in registration has passed)

Biolab hearing

The Alliance of Boston Neighborhoods asks those opposed to the South End biolab attend the following meeting:

CRITICAL BIOLAB OPEN HEARING

On Thursday September 20 at 7 PM at Faneuil Hall there will be a hearing on the State Court's mandated restudy by NIH of the Biocontainment Lab 4 in Boston.

Our lawyers feel it is VERY IMPORTANT  to fill this hall  with people who object to this biolab being built in the South End.

You may testify if you wish so be there early - but  it is not necessary to testify. JUST BE THERE.

IN THE PAST BU HAS PACKED THE HALLS WITH THEIR PEOPLE SO COME EARLY, AS EARLY AS 6:30 PM

The NIH report is over 300 pages long but there will be a flyer with summary and talking points at the door.

One point we can all raise at the hearing is that  while NIH's siting criteria for BSL4 labs include the absence of substantial community opposition, they have been ignoring the community response to this lab for almost five years.   

Senators Clinton and Schumer in New York have just announced their opposition to siting a BSL4 lab on Plum Island in Long Island Sound.  Their reason:  it's too close to New York City! It's time our Senators defended our right to be safe and secure in our community. It's time for NIH to acknowledge and respond to our opposition.

Jazz Fest

The Beantown Jazz Fest is coming at the end of the month.  The highlight of the fest is a FREE outdoor festival.  Sat, Sept 29, noon-6 at Columbus and Mass Ave (a short walk down the street).   Festival will have 14 bands on 3 stages, along with food, vendors and kid fun.

Quality of Life issues

We have been hearing some issues concerning 'quality of life' incidents in the ESNA neighborhood. These can include

- Drunk and Disorderly conduct
- Overnight vandalism to gardens & planters in front of homes & businesses
- Urination & vomit in doorways
- Excessive noise
- Speeding cars.

We encourage everyone to call 911 to report these problems. In Boston, 911 is our only link to the police, so do not feel guilty about calling 911 to report non emergencies. In fact, their first question will be "is this an emergency" and you can answer 'no'.

When you call 911 to report these types of crimes, they probably won't send someone out unless it's a slow night, but the call and address will get logged. The police do look at these logs and notice if trends or upswings in crime are happening, and make themselves more visible in the area. If you really don't want to make the police call, you can let us know via an email and we'll pass it on.

Help Clean Up Waltham

A group is getting together to help clean up the alley between Waltham and Union park. If you live on the Even side of Waltham and would like to join the cleanup team or help out, please let us know.

South End Open Studios

South End Open Studios will take place this year on the weekend of September 15th & 16th. For those new to the neighborhood, during Open Studios many local artists open up their homes and studios to share their art with the public. It's a fun weekend and a great way to visit part of our neighborhood that you don't usually see.

Double Movie Night

National Night Out

The main city event for National Night out (Tonight, Aug 7) is out at Franklin Park – not near the South End this year.   But I just got an email from councilor Yoon’s office which lists the following NNO events.  The one at Castle Square looks to be a big event and very kid friendly!
